Abstract

Recent studies have observed HPV as an agent of possible vertical transmission and a high prevalence of the virus in maternal and fetal placentas. The main objective was to identify the DNA of Human Papillomavirus - HPV in maternal and fetal placental tissue of women treated at a University Hospital in the far south of Brazil. A total of 327 deciduous placental samples from pregnant women attended between 2011 and 2015 at the FURG University Hospital were selected. Chorionic samples were screened according to the positivity of maternal samples. For the detection of HPV a PCR (nested) was performed with the primers MY09/MY11 and GP5/GP6. The variables were analyzed by Fisher's exact test and Pearson's Chi-square test with a significance level < 5%. The strength of association was calculated by the prevalence ratio and its 95% confidence intervals. The average age of women in general was 25.6 years (SD±7.17). The prevalence of HPV was associated with less than eight years of education (P = 0.001). As for the type of HPV, fourteen maternal samples (5%) were sequenced and these samples were infected by only one genotype. The results found in the sequencing were: HPV-16 (78.6%) and HPV-18 (21.4%). This study had HPV prevalence similar to the prevalence described in other studies carried out with the same objective. High-risk HPV genotypes were the most prevalent, with HPV-16 being the main viral type found.
