This work consists of an article aiming to analyze the relationship between suboptimal breastfeeding and the development of diarrheal diseases. The research explored statistical associations on the GBD Compare platform and utilized a literature review from the past 25 years, focusing on the connection between breastfeeding and diarrheal diseases in children up to 5 years old, as well as socio-economic, cultural, social, and psychological factors. In the discussion, the fundamental importance of breastfeeding is emphasized as the most sensitive, cost-effective, and efficient intervention in reducing infant mortality and diarrheal diseases, in addition to fostering the bond, affection, protection, and infant nutrition. In the Brazilian context, socio-economic disparities persist, contributing to breastfeeding rates below international standards. It is concluded, therefore, the relevance of breastfeeding in preventing infectious diseases, especially diarrheal ones, and the indispensability of continuous efforts to improve the promotion and practice of breastfeeding for the benefit of child health.
