Placental abruption and placenta previa are important risk factors for the development of
antepartum hemorrhage, an obstetric complication that poses a significant risk to fetal and
maternal health. This study aims to investigate the temporal tendency of morbidity due to
placenta previa, placental abruption and antepartum hemorrhage in Brazil between 2008
and 2021, as well as rates of hospitalization by region and age group. This is an ecological
study, with secondary data collected on the TabNet platform, developed by DATASUS.
For the analysis of the temporal trend of hospitalizations, the rates and the simple linear
regression method will be used. To examine the behavior (increase, decrease or stability)
and the Average Annual Growth Rate of the coefficient of hospitalization, the value
(positive or negative) and the statistical significance of the regression coefficient (β),
attested to the value of p≤0,05, were evaluated. The general rate of hospitalizations
showed a pattern of reduction, went from 19.71 (2008) to 14.46/100,000 inhabitants
(2021). In the age group analysis, the 10-19 and 20-29 year old group showed a reduction,
with a decrease of 6.08% and 9.99%, respectively, and the others denoted stability. As
for the analysis by region, the South, North and Northeast had a reduction, with a decrease
in hospitalization rates of 6.86%, 9.25% and 6.18%, respectively, while the Southeast and
Midwest showed stability. In conclusion, the study evidenced a downward trend in
hospitalizations for placenta previa, placental abruption and antepartum hemorrhage in
Brazil between 2008-2021.
