Abstract

Poisoning, whether by suicide attempts or individual accidents, has become a serious and growing public health problem. The aim of this study was to analyze the epidemiological profile of acute intoxications caused by drugs and drugs of abuse in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in the period from 2016 to 2020. A descriptive, retrospective documentary epidemiological study was carried out with a quantitative approach, using data from the CIT-RS. Clonazepam, paracetamol and cocaine were the drugs and drug of abuse that caused the most intoxications. Women had more cases of drug poisoning, while men had more cases with drugs of abuse. In the youngers, there was a trend of intoxication also by over-the-counter medications. It is necessary to improve measures related to drug surveillance, as well as preventive measures for the population and health teams, in order to minimize the chances of occurrence of toxic accidents.
