Abstract

The paper proposes some reflections and approaches on the role of universities in the protection of the rights of refugees and displaced persons. In this sense, this research aims to map and systematize the characteristics of welcoming programs for refugee students in higher education. It is a descriptive qualitative study, seeking to verify specific policies of access to higher education for refugees in different countries of the Americas, namely: Canada, Mexico and Brazil. To this end, we used the multiple case study method and divided the research into two parts: a) the first discusses the impacts of forced displacement on the educational trajectory of refugees, as well as the challenges for entering higher education; b) the second part presents the results and discussions on the cases analyzed. Through the study, it was possible to identify similarities and differences between the experiences observed, as well as to offer some suggestions and solutions to expand and improve the performance of Brazilian universities  regarding refugee  matters.
